Harold Gilman: Drawn from Life
"The reverent psychology of a Rembrandt with the colour of a Vermeer."
Sometimes I think that more wonderful than anything else he did are the two portraits he painted of his landlady in Maple Street, Mrs Mounter. They have the reverent psychology of a Rembrandt with the colour of a Vermeer. These portraits are the apotheosis of the charwoman, the transfiguration of homeliness, age, and toil into a spiritual loveliness of colour that time cannot wither … in these we get the whole of Gilman, the whole at his deepest and richest, of the painter we valued and of the man we loved, of the great colourist with his magic of harmony, and of the great-hearted democrat with his tenderness and love for all humanity.

The full-face Mrs Mounter portrait is just superb
My day just became lighter and happier thanks to this beautiful collection. An artist I've never seen before, and such exquisite visions he has painted. Thank you Victoria.
