M.R. James, Order of Merit and Fellow of the British Academy was a noted English scholar and medievalist, highly respected in academic circles. He is probably best remembered, though, for his Christmas Eve ghost stories - still produced in print, in the theatre, as well as on television and film - that have assured him of literary immortality.
