Thank you for introducing me to this story. I have never read anything outside of Sherlock Holmes works by Doyle, so I was surprised by the range of his work & the depth of his characterizations outside of the detective genre. What a masterful use of irony in the memorable conclusion!
I enjoyed this very much, and appreciate how you identified themes of pride and loyalty. The writing is wonderful--not an extra word but captures the scene with all the terror of the impending crash.
If anyone would like some background reading on the Society for Psychical Research, I can recommend Deborah Blum's "Ghost Hunters". William James set up the American branch - it had a lot of scientist members as well as literary luminaries, and if nothing else it's a useful reminder of the time before the split into "two cultures".
Well he gives away the twist in the first sentence... But yes a well told story. Late in life Conan Doyle did get tangled up in spiritualism, séances and all that, and became a true believer.
You’ve introduced "How it Happened" with such care and attention. The way you describe its gripping plot and profound themes immediately caught my interest. It’s always refreshing to revisit classics like this.
"One often does foolish things, and one has not always to pay the full price for them." I know that feeling.
A curiously gripping story - thank you for sharing!
Thank you for reading, Jeffrey :)

Thank you for reading, Ronald. Yes, it opens with a very large clue. No need for Sherlock :) 🕵️♂️
