Hello Stewart, thank you for your comments, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. He had such a tragically short life, but left a wonderful body of work. Of course, I’d be very happy for you to share it. You should be able to share it from a button at the bottom of the biography. Thank you so much for your interest and support! Victoria :)
Thank you very much for your essay. Before reading it, although I had seen some of his photographs and pictures at the RWA in Bristol, I knew nothing of his life. I had found his pictures a bit unusual due to seeming washed out somewhat, but now I am beginning to appreciate them more.
He seemed like very well balanced individual, a family man, who was working hard with his wife at his chosen profession. So it was very sad to hear how he had died and very poignant to read the long, but wonderfully detailed, last letter he had written to his wife.
One of our most amazing writers on Substack and a soon to be guest, thank goodness, on https://innerlifecollaborative.substack.com. This essay resounds with art, expertise and Eric Ravilious.
Hi Victoria. Thank you for reposting this. I don’t recall seeing it previously. What I love about your informative posts is that they inspire me to research further into individuals I am not familiar with, especially when their biography is supported by a further collection of their work as in this case. I had no idea that ER was killed in the war - such a sad story.
Such beautiful work, and such a sad ending. And how aful for his wife to receive his letter after the 'missing in action' one. Thanks for writing such an informative and important article, Victoria.
Love Ravilious. Wonderful artist. I have always deeply appreciated his wood engravings. So happy that Tirzah Garwood is getting more attention. The show this year at Dulwich Picture Gallery was wonderful and long overdue. Thank you for this post.
Wow a wonderful story and being in artist I have heard about him and May be a couple of works but with this I have learnt more and thank you for bringing it to us .. very moving …
Such amazing watercolor and pencil paintings and reminder of England in wartime. There are artists who create such wonderful work and much of it in a relatively overall short amount of time.

Those lovely, evocative Thirties colours, and oh, how very sad, and yet unsurprising. I wondered why I hadn't heard of him before.
It is such a tragic, and as you say, unsurprising, story. But, what an incredible body of work he left behind.
This is so so fantastic! Your work just gets better all of the time. 💕
Thank you so much, Matt. That means a lot 🧡
I would like to share your essay with a closed group of family and friends either on Facebook or in a WhatsApp group. Am I allowed to do that?

Just saw this advertised: Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious (Discover the first major exhibition devoted to visionary artist and designer Tirzah Garwood (1908–1951).: https://www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/2024/november/tirzah-garwood-beyond-ravilious/
Ooh lovely, thanks Deborah. There was a programme on Ravilious on Sky Arts last night, and another on war art.
Beautiful work! How tragic his life was cut short. Thank you so much for introducing me to him!
