I love her paintings and will be starting research for a biography of Harold Knight in the New Year! He was an equally gifted artist, but is much neglected.

Remarkable. I particularly like the self-portrait, with the unusual three-quarter view of the artist. It makes a statement

: Art is more important than the artist.

Wonderful to see so many Laura Knight paintings in one place and some that are new to me.

There was a wonderful exhibition in Plymouth a few years ago with a lot of these pictures (Ruby Loftus was a favourite) and we went back four times thinking we’d be unlikely to see so much of her work close up in one place again.

I love her plein air work especially and always try to imagine her carrying her canvases out onto the cliffs at Lamorna. We often sit there, in what we feel sure is almost the exact same place for some of her paintings and marvel that the sea is that exact colour.

Thank you for your lovely comment, Grace. It truly is wonderful to see her work in person. I completely understand you returning again and again. And to sit on Cornish cliffs looking out to sea. Perfection! 🩵

Hello Victoria,

My pleasure as always. Laura Knight is now a firm favourite Artist of mine now.

I hope all the rioting in England ceases and that you and your friends are nowhere near it. It is senseless and I do not understand why there is so much anger and hatred in the world. Heat does seem to exacerbate volatile situations. The Covid pandemic should have taught us to be more tolerant, forgiving and far less selfish. Back to the serenity of art, nature, books, family, and our very wise pets.

Best wishes,

Jan

Thank you, Jan. I’m so happy to say that it’s not reached our small town, but I’m just horrified to see the scenes across the country. And yes, thank goodness for art and books. And of course our loved ones - two and four-legged! :)

Thank you Victoria for introducing me to this wonderful Artist.

Laura Knight's paintings of women and their roles within the family are particular favourites for me. For me they depict the gentle, practical, protective aspects of motherhood - continuous love.

In contrast there is a strength in other paintings of women working during world war years.

This Artist has a varied and professional talent which I truly admire.

All in all a very thought provoking collection.

I don't remember seeing a few of these pieces and I really enjoy her work.

I love the fact that she was one of the first artists (if I'm remembering correctly) who had her nude models pose outside so she could paint the sunlight on their skin properly.

I thought I like her work from the 20s & 30s best, but the light in The Old Garden really made my heart skip a beat!

I love how skin seems so real and luminous at the same time in each of her portraits or any scene with people prominent. Lovely collection and a treat to read your biography of her as well.
