I love her paintings and will be starting research for a biography of Harold Knight in the New Year! He was an equally gifted artist, but is much neglected.
Thank you for your comment, Helen. And how wonderful to be working on a Harold Knight biography. I love his work also, they were such an incredibly gifted couple 🩶
Wonderful to see so many Laura Knight paintings in one place and some that are new to me.
There was a wonderful exhibition in Plymouth a few years ago with a lot of these pictures (Ruby Loftus was a favourite) and we went back four times thinking we’d be unlikely to see so much of her work close up in one place again.
I love her plein air work especially and always try to imagine her carrying her canvases out onto the cliffs at Lamorna. We often sit there, in what we feel sure is almost the exact same place for some of her paintings and marvel that the sea is that exact colour.
Thank you for your lovely comment, Grace. It truly is wonderful to see her work in person. I completely understand you returning again and again. And to sit on Cornish cliffs looking out to sea. Perfection! 🩵
My pleasure as always. Laura Knight is now a firm favourite Artist of mine now.
I hope all the rioting in England ceases and that you and your friends are nowhere near it. It is senseless and I do not understand why there is so much anger and hatred in the world. Heat does seem to exacerbate volatile situations. The Covid pandemic should have taught us to be more tolerant, forgiving and far less selfish. Back to the serenity of art, nature, books, family, and our very wise pets.
Thank you, Jan. I’m so happy to say that it’s not reached our small town, but I’m just horrified to see the scenes across the country. And yes, thank goodness for art and books. And of course our loved ones - two and four-legged! :)
Thank you Victoria for introducing me to this wonderful Artist.
Laura Knight's paintings of women and their roles within the family are particular favourites for me. For me they depict the gentle, practical, protective aspects of motherhood - continuous love.
In contrast there is a strength in other paintings of women working during world war years.
This Artist has a varied and professional talent which I truly admire.
Thank you so much, Jan. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the selection. Laura Knight is one of my favourite artists of the period and I loved putting the collection together :)
I don't remember seeing a few of these pieces and I really enjoy her work.
I love the fact that she was one of the first artists (if I'm remembering correctly) who had her nude models pose outside so she could paint the sunlight on their skin properly.
A wonderful long and productive life. Victorian times through the psychedelic era the 1960’s. Queen Victoria through the Beatles. And painting till the end. Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970). Just wow!
Thank you for sharing this curated collection of Knight’s work. Having discovered her work at The Beaney in Canterbury I’m learning more about her through your articles 😊
I love how skin seems so real and luminous at the same time in each of her portraits or any scene with people prominent. Lovely collection and a treat to read your biography of her as well.

Beautiful paintings, I especially love 'A Dark Pool', I feel like I could stare at it for hours...
Thank you, Kate. Her work is just incredible!
Remarkable. I particularly like the self-portrait, with the unusual three-quarter view of the artist. It makes a statement
: Art is more important than the artist.
Thank you, Rona. I’m so happy you enjoyed the collection 💚

Thank you, Beth. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the selection. Yes, she was one of the first. An incredible woman and artist!
I thought I like her work from the 20s & 30s best, but the light in The Old Garden really made my heart skip a beat!
Thanks for commenting, Jodi. Yes, so much of her work takes my breath away. Such an incredible talent!
If I am not all wrong there is another amazing and slightly over the top painting of her at current exhibition at the Tate Britain
Thank you for reading/viewing, Daniel. Have you been to see the exhibition?
What a wonderful body of work! Thank you for curating
Thank you. And you’re more than welcome 💛

Thank you for reading and commenting, Kathryn. She was an incredible woman and her body of work is wonderful. Her husband’s too.

Thank you so much, Cindy. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the biography 🩵
Oh my. A Dark Pool - the vividness of that figure. And Joan Rhodes - oh, for a portrait like that!
Aah yes, it would be so lovely to see a Laura Knight in person each day…
