Thank you for another wonderful collection of pictures, Victoria. While they all have merit, my favourite is ‘Spring Fever’ - a different take on new beginnings.

The 1930s and 40s springs are sheer delight. Suburban springs have a quality all their own.

These make a wonderful collection, Victoria, the various vivid shades of green perfectly evoking the season. I’m intrigued by Mark Gertler’s Spring, though. The grapes, pineapple and other rosy fruits suggest an autumn cornucopia rather than spring. An element of irony? But the fruits of autumn plenty begin in the spring growing season, don’t they?

Thank you, Hilary. I’m glad you liked the selection. Mark Gertler’s Spring was commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board - an organisation set up to encourage British people to buy goods from the Empire.

Nash's spring is quite wintry!
