Every painting took me to a different emotional realm. Spending time with them is like travelling to different "states". Thank you for posting. Looking forward to exploring more on Stanley Spencer.
I’d forgotten…well, not forgotten because that wouldn’t be possible really…how extraordinary his people are. They’re so full of force, pushing and pulling and bending their bodies this way and that..very visionary, as per your title.
They broke the mould with Stanley Spencer, though very occasionally his figures, especially in the chest of drawers pianting, remind us of Beryl Cook's work. Cook-Cookham! Mmm....
Wonderful pictures. There are crossovers with the much ignored Edward Burra, and the colour values of Wyndham Lewis - all just about of a similar time in history. I met Unity Spencer, his daughter and an artist in her own right. We sat together, alone in a vast cathedral-like room at the Royal Academy and discussed the forthcoming retrospective, in about 1980. One of her memories, that I remember, after a gap of 44 years, is of her father tossing pancakes. He exclaimed, as a pancake flipped into the air, "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you". Her experiences of living with the artist were not always easy, but she was a jealous guardian of his work. It is always a delight and inspiration to see those pictures. Thank you for the memories.
Thank you so much, Titus. And thank you for sharing your wonderful memories of meeting Unity. I love Spencer’s work and it was such a joy to put this selection together.
Fabulous selection. I’m always astonished at how wonderfully recognisable Stanley Spencer’s art is. He created such a unique style. Yet another exhibition (at the Tate) that we lived in a few years ago.
Love Mrs Baggett knitting while Mr uses the phone!

Ha, exactly. Thanks for reading/viewing, Susan 🤎
These show a natural talent with the vast and varied paintings created. The sausage one has made me hungry though :)
Go on… treat yourself :)
Love these! Thank you!
You’re very welcome, Rachel 💚

Yes, I can see the influence there. But, he was a marvel! :)
Truly he was!

I don't always read my subscriptions to substack, but when I do, I read BB.
Thank you, Titus. That really means a lot! 🧡
