This analysis by Virginia Woolf leaves me agahst. She takes us into and behind the work of the Brontes and shines a light on them so we see all the workings. I now need to read them again and travel back to that Parsonage and onto the moors. Thanks for posting Victoria.
Fascinating, Victoria. I agree with Virginia Woolf that ‘Villette’ is Charlotte Brontë’s finest novel. It doesn’t appear to have the width of readership that it deserves.
What a beautiful and insightful essay. You so wonderfully capture the strange, compelling power of Wuthering Heights- a book I have found both impossible to like and impossible not to think about often.
Realized that after I commented! She, meaning V.W., was quite an extraordinary writer of essays as well as fiction. I think I actually enjoy her non-fiction more. Thank you for this substack… I love reading it!
An interesting read from Virginia… I don’t (wholly) share her impressions of the character of Charlotte… but it’s good to reassess our own preconceptions!

You're very welcome, Jennifer. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the essay! :)
Brilliant. It makes me wonder what Woolf thought of Anne, who seems to be such a different kind of writer to her sisters.
Yes, it would have been wonderful if she had included Anne's most well-known novel in her analysis.

I agree, Maureen. Thank you for reading. And for your ongoing support. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you too, Victoria

Thank you for reading, Melinda. I'm afraid I didn't write it, though. It's an essay by Virginia Woolf. Though we do have the same initials :)

Very enlightening! Thank you. "the most lovable women in English fiction". Indeed they are!
And the Brontes, high amongst the best loved authors in English Literature.
Thank you for reading, Christina. And I absolutely agree!
